We have all heard by now of the rise in self harm amongst young people. For some parents this news will have come as a complete shock on hearing that one of those young people is their son or daughter.

Then starts the challenge of knowing which is the best approach to adopt in supporting your child, in supporting yourself  and the rest of the family, and of course, dealing with the self harming activity itself. This is also coupled with the challenge of knowing where to turn for help and which professional to approach!

In addition to the above, there are the added challenges of dealing with a gamut of raw emotions such as fear, guilt, sadness, anxiety, hurt, together with self blame, blaming other family members and/or the person who is self harming, in an attempt to somehow find a way through this situation and wondering why people self harm.

In these circumstances, parents can often feel quite alone, isolated and frustrated. With the stigma attached to self harm and some medical professional’s unhelpful approach to self harm, it is not always an easy situation and condition to deal with or get appropriate support for. The search for real help is made that much harder with websites promoting how to self harm. That said, parents self blame, however, does not help them or the situation, but rather keeps them stuck. There are a myriad of reasons why the self harming activity occurred in the first place. For instance, it can be triggered by simple causes like exam pressure to other complex family related matters. An open flow of information and communication is definitely the key in getting to the root cause of the self harming behaviour and gaining more self harm awareness.

Self harming activities are wide ranging and not just the stereotypical cutting. Hair pulling, alcohol abuse, gang culture, self neglect and head banging are just some other examples of self harm. It is also an activity that transcends all cultures, societies, religion and ages, starting from as young as three or four years old to senior citizens in their eighties. Indeed, some parents are themselves people who self harm and may have concerns about the knock on effect that this will have on their children.

There isn’t a typical person who self harms or a typical family that people who self harm come from.

Given that self harm is generally a cry for help, the situation isn’t just going to go away by itself! Parents require an avenue and means of getting the help and self harm support and open communication to deal with it.

One source of information is seeking advice via your local GP/doctor and another is via local counselling or therapeutic interventions.

The main thing is to acknowledge that there is a situation that needs to be dealt with if the whole family is to move forward.

Had my first morning walk this morning for nearly a year. Felt absolutely

I contacted one of my best clients today and they've told me that they had
to release 4 staff last week! I've put off asking them about my next
assignment. Cameron you really need to do much better!!!! People losing
their jobs for the government to mop up its own mess is simply not on!!

My son's off on his Duke of Edinburgh camping trip tomorrow. His rucksack is
sure heavy!!!

What's your favourite parenting tool or strategy that works for you every
time?

TOP TIP: How to help people to untangle their mixed up feelings: - Restate
their problem as a question like this: 'So the Question seems to be: How do
you express that you are feeling unloved at home without self harming?'

A parent being forced to do parenting programmes doesn't necessarily work!
If the parent is not willing to embrace the learning on the programmes, just
like any other course, they are wasting their time. The emphasis for me is
to work with the parent in respect of the ROOT CAUSE of their challenges.
Inadequate or inappropriate parenting is simply a SYMPTOM of what is going
on at the root cause or root level.

As I am making my sales calls for the past couple of days, it appears that
the rise in self harm in young people is increasing to the extent where
staff are both overwhelmed and baffled at the same time, as to what would
lead them to self harm in the way that they do.

Oh Lord, Bless our YOUNG PEOPLE from us 'adults' who can't do, won't do,
should do, shouldn't do, refuse to do, that which we expect and tell our
young people to do!, BUT wish we (adults) could do!

Oh and yeah, help us adults to develop the COURAGE to do that which we
expect our young to do.

Often adults talk about young people not taking responsibility for their
actions. Often adults haven't shown young people HOW to take responsibility!
That is, adults haven't lead the way or been a good role model for young
people to learn how to take responsibility. Adults? = parents, teachers,
society as a whole

This is so funny! I rang one of my Easy Tiger Parents Programme Graduates
last week as part of our normal 3 - 12 month Progress Review just to see how
she was getting on post the programme. And guess what? She refused to talk
to me!!! Why? Because she was in the middle of her 'ME TIME' activity :-),
which was something that she learnt to do and developed whilst she was on
the programme. :-) I guess the programme is still working for her then!!!!
And she completed the programme over 12 months ago. Brilliant!

The government hasn't introduced the GANG INJUNCTION for young people yet,
though they intend to if the pilot with adult gang members works. I'm glad
they haven't introduced it for young people yet because it's not more
injunctions, jails and criminalization that young people need, but PROPER
help to stay out of gangs, not join them in the first place. Young people
join gangs because gangs fill massive gaps and VOIDS in their lives. What
they need is something positive to replace the gang mentality first, before
taking this, their survival strategy away from them!!

The government has decided to launch a GANG INJUNCTION in England and Wales
yesterday, restricting the movements of adults believed to be gang members.
This includes police having on the spot powers to stop gang members meeting
each other and going into certain neighbourhoods.

Good news that the parents and community's petition to stop the government
closing down 7 - SEVEN - Children's Centres in Stoke has been a fantastic
success today!! Government did a U turn! Sadly, it decided to close other
facilities in the area that are used by people with disabilities and the
elderly :-(

I truly believe that when we are ready, the teacher will appear! I've seen
this happen several times in my life and was thankful for the teacher
appearing when they did as apposed to when I thought I wanted them
